Application of Tape in Automotive Wiring Harness

This article provides a detailed analysis of the types of tapes used in automotive wiring harnesses, including their materials and characteristics, working environment, selection of wire harness tapes, and how to use the tapes.

Tape is widely used in automotive wiring harnesses, which can be used for bundling wires, protecting wires, insulating wires, sound absorption, labeling, and fixing. With the development of the automotive industry and design concepts, the requirements for the use of tapes and the performance of tapes for wire harnesses in different functional parts have become diversified. Various styles and tapes with different material characteristics have emerged in the entire automotive industry, providing powerful protection and enhancement for the protection and performance of automotive wiring harnesses.

In the process of wire harness design and manufacturing, tapes have not received much attention, and the selection of tapes is often blind. This article analyzes and explains the classification and main characteristics, materials, selection, and usage methods of tapes used in automotive wiring harnesses.

Classification and Main Characteristics of Commonly Used Tapes in Automotive Wiring Harness

Commonly used tapes can be roughly divided into three categories according to their materials and characteristics: PVC tapes, cloth-based tapes, and sponge tapes.

PVC tape, also known as polyvinyl chloride electrical insulation pressure-sensitive adhesive tape, has a soft PVC film as the substrate and a adhesive layer mainly composed of natural rubber, acrylic adhesive, synthetic rubber, etc. PVC tape has good temperature resistance, cold resistance, corrosion resistance, oil resistance, and flame retardant properties.

The specifications of PVC tape are generally 8x10, 10x10, 12x10, 19x20, 38x20, and the standard thickness of the tape is generally 0.12mm, 0.15mm, 0.2mm, 0.25mm, etc. The working temperature range of PVC tape varies depending on the different auxiliary materials used. The commonly used PVC tape has three environmental temperature ranges: -40-85℃, -40-105℃, and -40~135℃ (special).

PET Tape, also known as polyester tape, has several types commonly used, including fiber-based tape, polyester-based tape, wool-polyester-based tape, flannel tape, felt tape, electrical insulation waterproof tape, and non-fabric-based tape. PET tape is not flame retardant, and the common color of PET tape is black. The common specifications of PET tape are usually 20x25, 40x25, etc., and the thickness of the tape is generally 0.25~0.8mm.
