Standardization and Platformization of Wiring Harness Connectors and Terminals

Connectors and terminals are important functional components of automotive wiring harnesses, and their selection directly determines the performance of the entire vehicle. The selection of standardized and platformized connectors and terminals not only ensures vehicle performance but also saves production costs.

The concept of platformization and standardization selection does not only mean selecting the same type of connector and terminal as much as possible within the same vehicle model, but also means selecting the same type of connector and terminal for different vehicle models. For example, the same type of front fog lamp connector can be selected for multiple vehicle models such as A, B, and C produced by a certain automaker.

Advantages of Standardization and Platformization Selection

Currently, the selection of connectors and terminals is mainly determined by automotive manufacturers, and different working environments and functional requirements require different connectors and terminals. When designing a wiring harness, selecting the same or similar connectors and terminals from the same manufacturer for a vehicle can facilitate management, reduce production and design costs, and increase interchangeability between connectors and terminals.

Guidelines for Standardized Connector and Terminal Selection

The external dimensions and structural forms should meet the requirements. The selection of connectors and terminals is based on meeting the spatial size requirements first, followed by the structural form requirements.

The working environment requirements should be similar. In the design, electrical components should be classified according to their approximate working environment, and connectors and terminals of the same type should be selected for electrical components with similar working areas.

The requirements for carrying current should be roughly the same. For some electrical components in the vehicle that require the same signal input and have similar power requirements, the same type of connector and terminal can be considered.

The actual number of pins used in connectors and terminals should be roughly the same. After planning the wiring harness of the entire vehicle, the number of wires in many places is basically the same. When the working environment is also the same, the same type of connector and terminal can be selected.

The positions must be different. When selecting the same type of connector and terminal, the installation positions must be considered to be different. Otherwise, connectors and terminals of the same type but different colors should be selected to prevent incorrect insertion.
